Tawa pulao is famous Mumbai street food. All the pav bhaji stalls serves this delicious rice called tawa pulao. They make this in big batches earlier and give you appropriate portion with a rich dollop of butter on top as you order. It has flavor of pav bhaji in it. It is not only available in Mumbai streets, but now all over the India there are many pav bhaji stalls and they serve this yummy pulao as a street food. Basically it is prepared on same tawa they make pav bhaji. So it is known as tawa pulao.

It can be made from left over rice at home. Pav bhaji masala takes this pulao to the whole new level and flavour.

cooking time: under 30 minutes


  • Cooked Rice – 3 cups
  • Beans chopped – ½ cup
  • sweet corn– ½ cup
  • Oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Butter/ghee – 2 tablespoons(optional)
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger paste – ½ teaspoon
  • Garlic paste – ½ teaspoon
  • Green chilies – 3, chopped
  • Onions – ½ cup, finely chopped
  • Green pepper (Capsicum) – ½ cup
  • Tomatoes – 1 ¼ cups, finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Red chili powder – 2 teaspoons
  • Pav Bhaji masala – 4 teaspoons
  • Water – ¼ cup
  • lemon juice – 1 tablespoon
  • Salt – to taste
  • fresh coriander leaves to garnish



  1. Heat the butter on a large tava (griddle), add the cumin seeds.
  2. When the seeds crackle, add the ginger-garlic paste,green chilies mix well and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. And the onions, mix well and sauté on a medium flame for another 1 to 2 minutes. Add the capsicum,chopped beans and sweet corn kernels.
  4. Add the tomatoes, mix well and again cook on a medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  5. Add the turmeric powder, salt, chilli powder, pav bhaji masala and 1/4 cup of water, mix welland cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the rice ,mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally. Squeeze some lemon juice on top.
  7. Serve immediately garnished with fresh coriander leaves.

tawa+ pulao

  • Tawa pulav is mostly made using peas,carrot and capsicum but use up whatever you have in your refrigerator.
  • Make sure the veggies are crunchy and dont overcook.
  • Dont replace or omit pav bhaji masala, it is the secret ingredient of tawa pulav.
  • This can either be made using fresh boiled rice or some leftover rice.Tastes great both ways.
  • For more crunch and taste garnish with finely chopped raw onion.
