HOMEMADE HOT APPLE CIDER

Apple cider (also called sweet cider or soft cider) is the name used in the United States and parts of Canada for an unfiltered, unsweetened, non-alcoholic beverage made from apples. Apple cider is easy to make and healthy .

This untreated cider is a seasonally produced drink with limited shelf-life that is typically available only in fall. Traditionally served on the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and various New Year’s Eve holidays, sometimes heated and mulled. It is the official state beverage of New Hampshire. This warm winter staple may ward of inflammation. And is know to have anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial powers.

Nothing says Autumn like a delicious glass of fresh apple cider. It is the signature dish of fall . That crisp, tangy smell is a treat all its own, and aside from brilliant fall foliage, is one of the best treats of the season! It wards off the evening chill, and cider preparation has historically taken advantage of all those windfall apples that drop from the trees before harvest time. What better way to keep the doctor away, especially when the days get shorter and the nights longer, than with a warm mug of cider?

Many apple cider recipes have sugar added to them and are overly sweet. But i made it without sugar and mixed honey before drinking, though i liked drinking it without the honey too. My house smelled soooo amazing- with cinnamon and apples, while it was simmering away on the stove top.

INGREDIENTS:-

  • 7-8 apples – cored and peeled
  • 1 orange- with skin
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 6-7 cloves
  • zest from 1 lemon
  • 2 glasses water

METHOD:-

Wash apples and orange thoroughly. Since i was using waxed apples,just peeled and cored them. If you can lay your hands on unwaxed apples, better just wash and cut them with the skin. Cut into quarters. Cut and quarter the orange . Trasfer to a large pot along with cinnamon and cloves. Cover and bring to boil for 30 minutes. Let it simmer for another hour more. Remove lid, mash fruit with a potato-masher, and simmer again for 20 more minutes. Strain pulp and spices and serve warm mixed with a tbls of honey per glass.

NOTES:-

  • For a sweet juice use apples such as Gala, red delicious of Macintosh. For a tart juice, use apples such as Granny Smith or Pink Lady.
  • If you have a juicer , just juice the apples and simmer the apple juice with all the other ingredients with just 2 cups water for 30 minutes . Strain and serve warm. This is a more quicker version.
