                                                    BEET ROOT BREAD

Are you adjusting your screen color or thinking if your eyes are suddenly seeing too much colour. And no i have not edited the pic colour nor added any food colour. This is beetroot bread.

Recently came across a zucchini bread and thought why not try a bread recipe from beetroot. Apart from all its health benefits I love its ruby red color and wanted to see how the bread will turn out. I divided the beet in two and made one half with whole brown wheat bread and other with whole white wheat bread.  Though the taste and texture was almost similar – the one with the white flour looked pretty and the other (brown bread) with just some reddish hue. It came out soft and rightly crusted. We had it like normal bread for breakfast with jam, cheese, eggs. And we have been having it since 4 days 🙂   .

Some of the know health benefits of beet root:-

  • Because of its high concentrates of nitrates it lowers blood pressure and helps fight heart diseases.
  • Beetroot contains folic acid which is crucial to the development of the spinal cord of the baby during the first three months of pregnancy.
  • Reduces osteoporosis
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Helps to keep blood sugar levels stable.
  • Low in calories and fat free
  • Treats anemia and fatigue.

If you are a bread lover and and health conscious and want veggies even in your bread, this is a must try.

I have just used the basic whole wheat bread recipie. You can make it with your own bread recipie and add in beetroot puree.

makes 1 loaf

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 sachet – dry active yeast
  • 1 tsp – honey
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp –  salt
  •  2 cups whole wheat flour
  • Half cup beetroot puree(blend the chopped beetroot with little milk)



In a small bowl add half cup warm water and 1 tsp honey and mix. Sprinkle yeast. Let set for 4…5 minutes. In a mixing bowl, stir in olive oil and salt. Gradually add flour, the yeast mixture,beetroot puree and more warm water,if needed. Turn dough into a lightly floured surface and knead for at least 5 minutes, till it is soft and pilable. Return dough to a clean bowl sprinkled with oil and cover with a clean damp cloth. Leave in a warm place to rice for 45 minutes or 1 hour.

Prepare a bread loaf pan with a cooking spray or a baking sheet . Once dough has doubled in size,flour hands and punch dough down. Leave dough in a large ball and place it on the baking sheet , cover and leave in a warm place to rise again for another 45 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350  and bake for 25 minutes or half an hour. Allow finished bread to cool off before slicing.

    I love the color of this bread and the healthfulness! The color is so intense and it looks quite moist as well, which I’m sure is the beetroot… Just lovely…
