Raagi Hareera

Fingermillet or raagi as it is widely know in south india is known to Contain an amino acid called Tryptophan which lowers appetite and helps in keeping weight in control. Ragi gets digested at a slower rate thus keeps one away from intaking excessive calories. Also, fibers present in ragi give a feeling of fulness thus controls excessive food consumption.Image

Ragi is rich in Calcium which helps in strengthening bones. It helps in controlling blood sugar level in condition of diabetes. Helps in lowering blood colostrol. and much more,,,,,,,,,Ever house which i know mostly have their own recipies in which they use raagi. It can be made into porridge,with milk ,with youghurt, drinks, with rice, dosa’s , pancakes, biscuits, cookies……..many such things. This recipie is what my mom makes since my childhood.

when i was small i used to hate raagi, wont even come to eat when it is cooked.

But when my mom makes this hareera we all just loved it…….its sooo yummy. We kids did not even knew it was made of raagi coz it tasted different from the usual raagi umbali.

makes – 6 glasses                   cooking time :25 minutes

  • 1 glass whole raagi
  • 15 almonds
  • 1 tsp rice
  • soak this three in water for at least 4 hrs
  • sugar- 1 cup
  • 2/3 cardamoms
  • 1 cup milk

Method ;

Wash the fingermillets and soak them along with the rice and almonds.
Adding just a little water grind it smoothly. Add water now…….it will be peach milk like. With the help of a big colander  drain out the milk and collect in a vessel.  Add the remaining raagi again grind adding little water and again take out the milk till only just the brown residue is remaining. Throw it out. and boil the raagi milk with a slow flame. You must constantly be stiring it. otherwise it will curdle. and burned easily. crush two or 3 cardomom pods and put along with sugar and pour the milk. it will take atleast 15 /20 mints till the milk starts to thicken. switch off the stove.
In winters it is served warm and in summers it is served cold. Garnish with nuts before serving. It can even be given to babies after 7 mnths. My little one just loves it. Hope u do too…….Image
